What is Anxiety

Like all higher animals, human beings have what has come to be known as a “Fight-or-Flight” response. This is the body’s automatic and unconscious response to a perceived threat. We perceive something we think may be a threat to our safety and our body kicks into gear, preparing us to either fight the threat or flee from it. We might start breathing faster to oxygenate our muscles, sweating to preemptively cool ourselves, and experience a feeling of unease that leads us to scan our surroundings more frequently. All of the above is normal and temporary.

Fight-or-Flight Mode

Anxiety is “Fight-or-Flight” gone awry. With Anxiety, the body and mind are effectively “stuck” in Fight-or-Flight mode. “Normal” Fight-or-Flight” is temporary: when the condition causing it is relieved, the nervous system resets to its resting, balanced state. However, this mechanism does not work properly in some people. Anxiety manifests in a myriad of ways. There are 5 major types of  Anxiety Disorders: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, and Social Anxiety disorder. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is classified as an Anxiety Disorder as well. Information on how LANC can help with PTSD can be found here (LINK). Constant worrying over something without an identifiable cause to the point where it consumes the subject’s thinking is likely GAD. Social Anxiety Disorder, as its name implies, is characterized by overwhelming anxiety and self-consciousness in everyday social situations. Panic Disorder is characterized by panic attacks: unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear, usually accompanied by physical symptoms, such as heart palpitations and shortness of breath. Anxiety can also manifest as a Phobia. A Phobia, is a state where the “Fight-or-Flight” reflex kicks into high gear when confronted with something relatively harmless. The reaction is severely out of proportion to the threat (if any) and often has no logical causation. With all of these forms of Anxiety, the Fight-or-Flight response is either continuously “on” or grossly overreacts to certain stimuli. When the nervous system does not reset to its normal resting state, anxiety can become chronic and debilitating. And since Anxiety includes a physical element as well as a psychological one, prolonged or severe Anxiety can lead to insomnia, exhaustion, and other physical difficulties. Using Direct Neurofeedback, LANC can help address these types of Anxiety and others not listed here.

Traditional Options and Results

Typical solutions for Anxiety involve medications, which often produce significant side effects, and/or psychotherapy, which can take considerable time–even years–to be effective.   Finding the right medication or combination of medications can take time, and if antidepressants are used, the process of being weaned off of them may take months.*

*If you are currently taking medication for Anxiety, Depression, or any other emotional or psychological disorder, be sure to tell your LANC practitioner on your first visit. Do not stop taking medication or adjust your dosage without consulting your prescribing physician.

What is Direct Neurofeedback?

Numerous studies have shown that biofeedback is an effective way to treat Anxiety. The latest development in biofeedback–Direct Neurofeedback–uses a very weak micro current to produce a subtle change in the patterns of brainwaves. When the brain is stimulated in this way, the resulting feedback loop acts as a kind of brain training, allowing the brain to re-evaluate its current neural pathways and forge new, more effective paths. In the case of Anxiety, the brain is either reminded to reset itself to its “normal,” anxiety-free state or to create new neural pathways that do not lead to overreaction. Think of it like rebooting a computer that has frozen up. A reboot allows the computer to discontinue the routine that rendered it stuck. Afterwards, the tiny differences between the processes that were functioning when the computer froze and the processes that work upon rebooting will allow the computer to perform tasks without difficulty.

The experience I had with the Los Angeles Neurofeedback Center exceeded my expectations. Within just a few sessions there was a noticeable and tangible change in my anxiety level. I feel calmer, less anxious and more like myself.

ADD Help using Direct Neurofeedback

What Can You Expect from Direct Neurofeedback?

LANC’s Direct Neurofeedback often results in periods of improvement within the first few sessions as the brain “remembers” to reset to its resting, non-anxious state or begins charting new pathways. As your sessions progress, your anxiety-free periods will grow longer and episodes will be less severe and shorter in duration. Your brain will begin to accept the resting state as its “new normal.” Progress may be more difficult to discern in cases where Anxiety is triggered by certain conditions that the client has come to avoid, but improvement is happening. Another benefit is that the LANC Direct Neurofeedback experience only requires the client to sit back and relax. There isn’t pressure on the client to “do it right,” and therefore should not cause additional anxiety.

Since LANC Direct Neurofeedback sessions only last about 30 minutes and are usually done twice a week at first, improvement may be seen quite quickly, especially when compared to medication and/or psychotherapy. Results may vary depending on the type and severity of one’s Anxiety. In all cases, your LANC practitioner will work closely with you to monitor your improvement and adjust your program.

Ongoing Sessions & Expectation Using Direct Neurofeedback

Subsequent sessions are 30minutes long and it is recommended that a minimum of 2 sessions be completed per week, for the first 3 weeks. Sessions are then spaced out depending on how long the results are enduring for the client.

Clients can often tell in the first session or two if Direct Neurofeedback will be the beneficial for them to continue. An average of 15-20 sessions total are required for enduring results. For clients who are only in town for a short amount of time, sessions can be done on back-to-back days so that 20 sessions can be completed over a few weeks period.
