PTSD WITH ANXIETY

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is classified as an Anxiety Disorder. While LANC’s DNFB has had positive effects on all kinds of Anxiety Disorders, PTSD has several unique characteristics that are crucial when considering PTSD treatment.  With most Anxiety Disorders, the reactions often seem “irrational” in that they are a great overreaction to a minor or nonexistent threat (such as Coulrophobia – phobic fear of clowns) and the phobias often have no discernible origin.

On the other hand, PTSD signs and PTSD attacks CAN be traced to a specific event or series of events where severe harm was experienced or threatened. While PTSD has been most associated with the effects of extraordinary trauma, such as combat, rape, and physical abuse, recent research has shown that PTSD can occur when more “domestic” trauma, such as emotional abuse, is repeated over time. Even when the person isn’t being actively triggered, they are often in a constant state of hypervigilance, and hypervigilance is mentally and emotionally exhausting.

COMPARING LANC TO DEPRESSION TREATMENT

PTSD is not feeling anxious or uncomfortable when re-experiencing particular situations. PTSD is not simply remembering how one felt in an unpleasant situation. Nor is PTSD simply an extreme reaction to an extreme situation. When PTSD manifests, an event triggers the person’s body and mind to return to the physical and emotional state they were in at the time of the trauma. Thus, a sudden, loud noise may cause a veteran’s body and mind to go to the extreme fight or flight state they were in at the time of the original trauma. In the most extreme cases, the behavior caused by the response may lead to serious repercussions when it affects others.

Similarly, a person who suffered severe emotional abuse may go into a fight or flight state simply by hearing someone yelling at another, even though the yelling has nothing to do with the speaker whatsoever. Such a state is often referred to as a PTSD flashbackAgain, the client’s response in the flashback state may be extreme. In some cases, the person may find themselves lashing out or completely “shutting down”. This may mean that during the flashback and for a time afterwards the person is debilitated and unable to function normally, hence PTSD disability.  This may also mean that those suffering with PTSD do not want to talk about the experience or may isolate in order to avoid triggers.

The initial intake session costs only $89 at our West LA office and $149 at our South Bay office, and is the first step towards PTSD help. LANC NeuroCoaches customize packages according to you or your loved one’s needs.

TRADITIONAL PTSD TREATMENT OPTIONS

The most common option for PTSD treatment is psychotherapy with an emphasis on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). While this approach is often effective over time, it can have drawbacks especially if used as the sole therapy for PTSD. In CBT, the client is encouraged to face their fears in a safe, controlled environment. This means the client must effectively trigger and relive their original trauma to some extent many times until they come to terms with it.

While this may be effective in the long run, this approach is very difficult for the client – many clients simply do not want to “go there,” even if it will help with PTSD eventually. Some medications used for other Anxiety treatment are prescribed to treat PTSD as well. In addition to having unpleasant side effects, these drugs have other drawbacks. It takes trial and error to discover the best medication and dosage for an individual, and if that person wants to change or stop taking the drugs, weaning off can take months, often with unpleasant side effects.

LANC PROVIDES PTSD HELP

Many suffering with PTSD can find going through CBT as intolerable as the PTSD itself.  LANC can alleviate this problem so PTSD help is possible without medication or re-activating the trauma. One of the greatest benefits of LANC’s DNFB compared to other PTSD treatment, is that LANC’s holistic sessions require almost no involvement on the part of the client.  No discussion of PTSD triggers or PTSD flashbacks is needed. Remember that with PTSD, the fight or flight response is almost always “on,” even if the client is not aware the fight or flight symptoms.

PTSD sufferers who use DNFB will usually feel short periods of relaxation lasting hours or a few days. As they continue with their program, these periods lengthen, and the client may find they are less susceptible to triggering stimuli. If the client is also in psychotherapy, Direct Neurofeedback may relax their trigger response to a point where they are more comfortable “going there” and addressing the underlying traumatic events. Persons with PTSD are often concurrently diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. Learn how LANC can also help you with Depression.

EXPECTATIONS FOR A DNFB SESSION

LANC sessions are done in a quiet, relaxing environment that, in themselves, support a reduction in fight or flight.  Clients spend the 20-30-minute session sitting back and relaxing in a comfortable chair.  Improvement can be seen quite quickly with PTSD symptoms.

LANC’s Direct Neurofeedback usually brings immediate results in the first session, all done holistically.  Most of LANC’s clients report a degree of immediate improvement in the area of concern, usually during or immediately after a session.

Within the first few sessions of LANC’s DNFB, the brain “remembers” how to reset to its resting, non-anxious state and begins charting new pathways. LANC’s DNFB modality is so effective for those needing PTSD treatment, the US Veteran Affairs ordered a double-blind study on the technology to be completed in 2021.

What to Expect During PTSD Neurofeedback Treatment

\n

Your treatment begins with a comprehensive qEEG brain map that reveals the specific patterns of neural dysregulation associated with your trauma response. In PTSD, we commonly see overactivation in the right hemisphere and amygdala-driven fear circuits, along with suppressed activity in the prefrontal regions responsible for emotional regulation. This detailed map allows us to create a targeted protocol specific to your brain.

\n

During each 30 to 45 minute session, sensors placed on your scalp monitor brainwave activity while you watch a video display. The screen responds in real time to your brain patterns — when your brain moves toward calmer, more regulated states, the display rewards you with clear images and sound. Over time, your brain learns to sustain these healthier patterns on its own, reducing the hypervigilance, flashbacks, and emotional reactivity characteristic of PTSD.

\n

Most clients begin to notice improvements within the first 8 to 12 sessions. Early changes often include better sleep, reduced startle responses, and a greater sense of calm. A full course of treatment typically involves 20 to 40 sessions, depending on the complexity and duration of the trauma. Because neurofeedback works directly with your brain's electrical activity rather than requiring you to verbally process traumatic memories, many clients find it less distressing than traditional exposure-based therapies.

Research Supporting Neurofeedback for PTSD

Neurofeedback has gained significant recognition as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, with research demonstrating its ability to help calm the overactivated threat-detection systems in the brain that maintain PTSD symptoms. A groundbreaking study published in NeuroImage: Clinical by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk found that neurofeedback produced significant improvements in PTSD symptoms, emotional regulation, and executive function, with many participants no longer meeting diagnostic criteria for PTSD after treatment.

PTSD is fundamentally a disorder of brain dysregulation. The amygdala, which serves as the brain's alarm system, becomes hyperactive and overly sensitive to perceived threats, while the prefrontal cortex, which normally provides rational assessment of danger, becomes underactive. This imbalance keeps PTSD sufferers trapped in a constant state of hypervigilance. Neurofeedback addresses this directly by training the brain to restore healthy communication between these regions.

One of the most compelling advantages of neurofeedback for PTSD is that it does not require patients to relive or discuss their traumatic experiences. This makes it particularly valuable for individuals who find exposure-based therapies retraumatizing or who have complex trauma histories. The treatment works at the neurological level, allowing the brain to release its stuck patterns without conscious processing of traumatic material.

PTSD Treatment at Los Angeles Neurofeedback Center

The Los Angeles Neurofeedback Center in Brentwood provides specialized neurofeedback treatment for PTSD and trauma-related conditions. Our Westside Los Angeles location serves veterans, first responders, accident survivors, and individuals affected by interpersonal trauma from across the greater LA area.

Our CLARITY Direct Neurofeedback approach is particularly well-suited for PTSD because it works passively and gently, without requiring patients to discuss or relive their trauma. Many PTSD sufferers have found traditional talk therapy or exposure-based treatments to be overwhelming or retraumatizing. Our method simply allows the brain to reorganize its activity patterns while the patient sits comfortably, making it a safe and tolerable option even for those with severe symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions About PTSD Neurofeedback

Is neurofeedback safe for people with PTSD? Yes. Unlike exposure-based therapies that require you to revisit traumatic memories, neurofeedback works directly with your brain's electrical patterns without requiring you to talk about or relive the trauma. This makes it particularly suitable for individuals who find traditional talk therapy re-traumatizing.

Can neurofeedback replace my current PTSD treatment? Neurofeedback is often used alongside other treatments such as EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, or medication. Many clients find that neurofeedback helps them engage more effectively with other therapies by first calming the overactivated stress response system. Your treatment plan will be tailored to work with your existing care.

How long do the results last? Research shows that the brain changes produced by neurofeedback tend to be durable. A study published in Biological Psychiatry found that PTSD patients who completed neurofeedback training maintained their improvements at a three-month follow-up without additional treatment. Many of our clients report lasting benefits years after completing their sessions.

Do you treat veterans and first responders? Absolutely. Our Los Angeles clinic has extensive experience working with veterans, active military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMTs. We understand the unique challenges these populations face and tailor our protocols accordingly. We also work with survivors of accidents, assault, natural disasters, and childhood trauma.
